Travel Guide

Choose the Season. Shape the Journey.

Tanzania can work across the year. The best month depends on what you want most: wildlife, migration, green landscapes, culture, or a mountain climb.

The big picture

There is no single “best” month.

Tomisa’s planning brief calls for seasonal wildlife, Great Migration timing, dry and green seasons, and the best months for Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru to be considered together. Use the guide below as a planning framework rather than a promise of exact wildlife sightings.

JAN — MARGreen season in Tanzania

Green landscapes & young wildlife

A strong period for lush scenery and a quieter visual character in many areas. Calving-season wildlife can be a major draw in parts of the Serengeti, while short rains can shape daily conditions.

APR — MAYWildlife in the dry season

Green season & quieter travel

Rainfall can be more frequent, but landscapes are vivid and visitor numbers can be lower. This season can suit travellers who value atmosphere, photography and flexible planning.

JUN — OCTSerengeti seasonal wildlife

Classic safari season

Generally drier conditions make this a popular window for Northern Circuit wildlife journeys. Migration location changes through the year, so route design should be matched to the latest seasonal pattern rather than a fixed promise.

NOV — DECTanzania landscape after rain

Short rains & fresh landscapes

The short rains can refresh the landscape and create dramatic skies. Some travellers prefer this period for its colour and lower-pressure feel, while others prioritise the drier months.

Wildlife

For the Northern Circuit

Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara can be visited year-round, but the character of each destination changes with rainfall, vegetation and seasonal wildlife movement. If the Great Migration is your priority, tell us what you want to see and your exact travel dates so the route can be designed around the relevant sector.

Mountains

For Kilimanjaro & Meru

Mountain conditions are part of the decision. The Tomisa content brief specifically calls for best-month guidance for Kilimanjaro and Meru. Your route length, acclimatisation plan, weather tolerance and trekking experience should all be considered before choosing dates.
