Cultural Experiences

Meet the people behind the landscape.

Wildlife is only one part of Tanzania's story. Around Lake Eyasi and the Lake Natron region, cultural journeys open a different window into place, knowledge, memory and everyday life.

Beyond the game drive

Culture is an encounter, not a performance.

Tomisa's cultural concept is built around community-led experiences, respectful conversation and enough space to listen. The exact format, duration and community arrangements should always be confirmed before a visit.

Did you know?

Two cultures. Two very different relationships with place.

Hadzabe

A language with distinctive click sounds.

Hadzane/Hadza is known for its distinctive click consonants and is generally treated by linguists as a language isolate. The click sounds are one of the most recognisable features of Hadzabe linguistic heritage.

Hadzabe

Lake Eyasi is more than a lake stop.

The Lake Eyasi basin is central to Hadzabe life and traditional hunting-and-gathering knowledge. The community’s relationship with the bush, seasonal foods, honey, wildlife and water is part of what makes a visit here fundamentally different from a conventional game drive.

Sonjo / Batemi

Water is central to the story.

The Sonjo, also known as Batemi, are a Bantu-speaking agro-pastoral community west of Lake Natron. They are especially known for long-established, locally managed irrigation agriculture supported by springs and streams in an otherwise semi-arid landscape.

Sonjo / Batemi

The landscape sits above Lake Natron.

The Sonjo homeland lies west of Lake Natron in northern Tanzania. Reliable springs and streams have played an important role in where communities settled and how farming systems developed in this dry environment.

How we want to travel

Come curious. Leave respectful.

A cultural visit should give hosts control over what is shared. That means asking before taking photographs, following community guidance, avoiding intrusive questions and allowing the day to unfold without forcing a performance.

Where a cultural activity involves demonstrations, storytelling, food, craft or traditional knowledge, Tomisa should confirm the community-approved format and any contribution mechanism before the experience is published as a bookable product.
