Planning note: The Tomisa source draft specifies a three-day schedule and notes that it is fast-paced. TANAPA confirms the mountain-hiking format uses Miriakamba and Saddle huts with ranger support. Tomisa should confirm the final pace and park arrangements before booking.

Why Mount Meru

The mountain gives the journey a different rhythm from Kilimanjaro. Lower sections pass through genuine wildlife habitat, while higher stages reveal the crater, Ash Cone and the narrow summit ridge. On clear mornings the summit offers a striking view toward Kilimanjaro.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1Momella Gate → Miriakamba Hut

Begin with the park formalities and ranger briefing at Momella Gate before walking through the lower slopes of Arusha National Park. The trail moves through open grassland and forest, where wildlife may be present, before climbing steadily toward Miriakamba Hut. The first day is about finding a sustainable pace and allowing the body to begin adjusting to altitude.

Tomisa noteWildlife encounters are never guaranteed; ranger instructions and the confirmed park route always take priority.
Day 2Miriakamba Hut → Saddle Hut

Climb through changing vegetation toward Saddle Hut, where the landscape becomes more open and volcanic. The route brings the Meru crater and upper ridges into view. If conditions and the confirmed schedule allow, an acclimatisation walk toward Little Meru can add altitude exposure without committing to the summit effort.

Tomisa noteAny acclimatisation extension is subject to guide, ranger, weather and park approval.
Day 3Saddle Hut → Socialist Peak → descent

The summit day begins before dawn. Follow the crater rim toward the higher points of the ridge, with careful footing required on the steeper volcanic sections. At Socialist Peak, pause for the summit experience and, when visibility allows, views across the crater and toward Kilimanjaro. The descent is long, so the pace becomes deliberately controlled before continuing down to the park exit according to the final three-day operating plan.

Tomisa noteThe three-day schedule is demanding. A longer version may be more appropriate depending on fitness, acclimatisation and the final park-approved plan.
