Choose your route. Find your rhythm. Reach the summit.
Marangu is the traditional hut-based route, which sets it apart from the camping routes. The five-day version is the shortest commonly offered summit itinerary, meaning less time to acclimatise than longer climbs. A sixth day is a wise addition for most trekkers.
After registration and a route briefing at Marangu Gate, the trail enters the montane rainforest. The walk is steady rather than rushed, with time to notice the changing vegetation and settle into the mountain rhythm before reaching Mandara Hut.
The forest gradually gives way to open moorland as the trail climbs toward Horombo. Mawenzi’s rugged outline begins to appear, and the broader views are a reminder that the climb is moving into a higher, colder environment.
A longer high-altitude day crosses the saddle toward Kibo. Vegetation becomes sparse and the terrain more exposed. The afternoon is intentionally quiet so the body can rest and prepare for the pre-dawn summit attempt.
The summit push begins in the early hours. The ascent is slow and deliberate toward Gilman’s Point and onward to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. After time at the summit, descend carefully to Horombo for recovery.
Complete the descent through the moorland and forest zones to Marangu Gate. After the park formalities, transfer onward to Moshi or Arusha according to the confirmed plan.

Vegetation: Cultivated foothills → montane rainforest → heath/moorland → alpine desert → summit/arctic zone.
Climate: Cooler and wetter on the forested lower slopes; progressively colder, windier and drier above the moorland. Summit temperatures can fall well below freezing.
Acclimatisation: A staged ascent through five distinct ecological zones; the key acclimatisation night is at Horombo before the move to Kibo and the summit attempt.
Altitude figures are route-guide elevations and can vary slightly with the confirmed trailhead, camp allocation and route variation.
