Altitude, acclimatisation & ecology

Nine days. One mountain. A journey around Africa's highest peak.
The Northern Circuit is the longest standard route on Kilimanjaro. It sweeps across the quiet northern slopes before joining the summit approach, and the extra days make it ideal for travellers who want a gradual climb and the most scenery.
Begin on the western side of Kilimanjaro through forest terrain. The gradual opening stage prepares the body for the longer northern circuit.
Climb beyond the forest into heath and moorland, reaching the Shira Plateau and its broad volcanic scenery.
Spend another measured day on the plateau, allowing altitude adjustment while taking in views across the western side of the mountain.
Cross toward the northern side through increasingly rugged high-altitude terrain. Moir Hut provides a quieter staging point away from the busiest sections.
Continue across the northern slopes. The route’s appeal is its sense of space and the changing perspective on Kibo and Mawenzi.
Traverse further east across the northern circuit, maintaining a steady pace and using the extra days to acclimatise rather than chase distance.
Move toward the summit staging area. The final approach is deliberately conservative, with rest and hydration becoming as important as the kilometres walked.
Begin the summit attempt in the early hours. Reach the crater rim and continue to Uhuru Peak before descending to Mweka Camp on the southern side.
Complete the descent through the forest to Mweka Gate, finish the park procedures and transfer onward.

Vegetation: Montane rainforest → heath/moorland → alpine desert → summit/arctic zone.
Climate: The extended northern traverse provides more time in progressively colder and thinner air; exposed upper slopes can be very cold and windy.
Acclimatisation: Its longer circuit allows a gradual altitude profile and multiple acclimatisation opportunities before the summit day.
Altitude figures are route-guide elevations and can vary slightly with the confirmed trailhead, camp allocation and route variation.

The journey begins through forest before reaching the open western slopes.
A long, quieter traverse reveals wide views across the mountain and plains.
Camp life at altitude is simple, focused on rest, hydration and preparation.
