Moderate to strenuous

Machame is one of the mountain's most popular scenic routes. It climbs through several ecological zones on the southern approach before joining the summit route.

Day-by-day route

Day 1Machame Gate → Machame Camp

After registration, enter the rainforest and climb through dense vegetation toward Machame Camp. The first day establishes the route’s scenic character while keeping the pace controlled.

Tomisa noteRoute timing, camp availability, guide arrangements and final operating details are confirmed for your dates.
Day 2Machame Camp → Shira Camp

The trail leaves the rainforest and enters heath and moorland. As the ground opens out, the Shira Plateau begins to reveal itself and the mountain feels considerably more remote.

Tomisa noteRoute timing, camp availability, guide arrangements and final operating details are confirmed for your dates.
Day 3Shira → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp

This is an important acclimatisation day: climb toward the Lava Tower area before descending toward Barranco. The classic “climb high, sleep lower” pattern gives the day a useful altitude-training rhythm.

Day 4Barranco Wall → Karanga → Barafu

Tackle the Barranco Wall before traversing toward Karanga and continuing to Barafu. The landscape becomes increasingly stark, and the summit preparation begins in earnest.

Day 5Barafu → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

Begin the summit attempt before dawn. The route climbs slowly through the alpine desert toward the crater rim and Uhuru Peak, then descends to Mweka Camp for a well-earned recovery night.

Day 6Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate

The final descent returns through the upper forest toward Mweka Gate. Celebrate the completion of the climb before your onward transfer.

Climate & vegetation

What changes as you climb?

Vegetation: Montane rainforest → heath/moorland → alpine desert → summit/arctic zone.

Climate: Warm and humid at the gate, increasingly cool and dry with altitude; summit night is cold, windy and often below freezing.

Acclimatisation: The 6-day version is compact; the 7-day variation adds an acclimatisation day and generally gives the body more time to adapt before the summit push.

Altitude figures are route-guide elevations and can vary slightly with the confirmed trailhead, camp allocation and route variation.
