Climate & vegetation

What changes as you climb?

Vegetation: Montane rainforest → heath/moorland → alpine desert → summit/arctic zone.

Climate: Steep lower forest is humid; exposed upper terrain becomes colder, drier and more wind-affected.

Acclimatisation: Umbwe is a direct route with faster early altitude gain. That makes conservative pacing, hydration, sleep and symptom monitoring particularly important.

Altitude figures are route-guide elevations and can vary slightly with the confirmed trailhead, camp allocation and route variation.
